Was uns alle an BACKROOMS fasziniert – Kritik & Analyse

They still exist, the true cinematic miracles. Not He-Man or some "Star Wars" spin-off, but a 21-year-old YouTuber is causing a sensation on the big screen. "Backrooms" is a phenomenon – and rightly so! What began as a 4chan post and later continued as a YouTube series has now been released as a feature film. Kane Parsons takes his protagonists and us into a world behind the world, one that seems to operate according to different physical laws and where familiar objects become uncanny. The camera shows endless corridors, oversized empty yellow rooms, tiny doors, and inconspicuous portals. How is this to be interpreted? The protagonists have to cope with psychological trauma, but the trauma narrative alone isn't enough; a psychoanalytic interpretation isn't sufficient to understand the fascination. More on this from Wolfgang M. Schmitt in the new film analysis! Literature: Umberto Eco: The Open Work of Art. Suhrkamp. Juliane Rebentisch: Theories of Contemporary Art. Junius.
