NO WAY - NOT POSSIBLE! 68-yr old grandpa chases down a bunch of young pro Spec Miata drivers at VIR?

After my horrendous crash in Oct 2024, which left me in hospital for a month, and in a wheelchair for 7 months, I was completely filled with self doubt, as to whether I would actually even be able to race again, but especially concerned that I would never again run at the front of this amazing Spec Miata class, that has given me so much joy for the past 18 years. I qualified 8th with my great team-mate Chuck Mactutus, lose a place at the start, and completely lose contact with the pack up front, which is the beginning of the end in this class, as the draft plays such an important role. I make the agonizing decision to try and run down the pack in front, which in 99% of all cases proves futile, but fortunately the leaders start fighting at the front and that allows me to inch my way closer to the lead pack. Eventually I make contact, and slowly move my way through the pack to 4th, then 3rd, then 2nd and finally, I am leading a Spec Miata HST again. I wish everyone could feel that joy and relief that swept through my body, so amazing, I was smiling an laughing inside my helmet. I even contemplated pulling over and just enjoying the moment, but I carried on, finishing 2nd in a cluster of a race that never gave the last lap flag and was eventually finished to the prior lap. On the motor racing front, I compete in SCCA and NASA events around the USA. I race both Spec Miata (SM) and Super Touring Lite (STL) cars. My cars are prepared by MTP Autosports, my SM is powered by Rossini Racing Engines, my STL is powered by Nelson Racing Engines, and both cars are stopped by the best damn brakes known to man, G-Loc Brake Pads, my gearboxes are from PlanetMiata.com, with contingency support from Hoosier Racing Tire, Toyo Tires and Mazda Motorsports. On the motorcycle front I have raced Motocross, Supercross, Hare Scrambles, Enduros, Roof of Africa, and Baja 1000 Off-Road Races, and i love to do long, multi-day trips on adventure bikes around the world.
