A 1909 photograph of Seokguram Grotto, released a few years later, reveals that the original form of the grotto's antechamber was a curved structure, unlike its current form. This refutes the theory that a wooden building existed in front of the antechamber and suggests that Seokguram Grotto was originally an open structure. Furthermore, the interior lighting likely utilized indirect reflections from the granite floor, rather than artificial windows. Above all, the secret to Seokguram Grotto's preservation for millennia lay in the rock layers of its roof. Hidden within was the scientific principle of air circulating between the rock layers, naturally removing moisture. However, faulty concrete repairs during the Japanese colonial period have revealed that this sophisticated dehumidifying function and its original form have been damaged.
