Diorama Playmobil English The Battle of Gingindlovu, April 2, 1879 After the English defeat at Isandlwana (January 22, 1879), the bulk of the army had to retreat, leaving Charles Pearson's forces isolated at Eshowe. Once reorganized, Lord Chelmsford organized a column of 3,390 Europeans and 2,280 Africans, supported by artillery and the famous Gatling, to march to his aid. Progress was slow, as Chelmsford took a roundabout route to avoid an ambush and fearing a repeat from Isandlwana, entrenching (laager) his camp at the end of each day. Despite this slow progress, Pearson's observers at Eshowe were able to see the relay column on the southern bank of the Inyezane on the afternoon of April 1. The laager was located on a 300 ft (100 m) ridge with a good slope in all directions, allowing a good range of fire. At dawn on April 2, an army of 12,000 Zulu warriors rushed into the defensive positions to stop the column before it reached Eshowe. The defense of Chelmsford worked and the Zulu army had to withdraw being pursued by the English cavalry. At the end of the combat, 700 Zulu dead were counted and the British only suffered 11 dead and 48 wounded. The war continued until on July 4 the King of the Zulu, Cetshwayo, was finally defeated at the Battle of Ulundi.
