The last tournament, held in 2015, was held in Japan for the first time in 18 years, with over 50 countries and regions participating. Japan won all events, including the men's and women's individual and team events, maintaining its reputation as the birthplace of kendo. South Korea, a rival that Japan has frequently faced in finals and has repeatedly faced off against in close battles. South Korea won the only tournament in which Japan failed to win the World Championships. Once again, Japan faced off against South Korea in the men's and women's team and men's individual finals. However, Japan consistently demonstrated its strength, fending off South Korea's challenge and taking victory in all four events.
