This farmer was one of the first in Khung Kraben Bay to experience the black-chinned tilapia infestation several years ago. Despite trying everything – pumping out the water for cleaning, using tea residue to disinfect, letting the ponds rest, and using nets to trap the fish – the result is a large number of tilapia, both large and small, with mouths full of eggs. Like many other aquaculture farmers in Khung Kraben Bay, they have no choice but to accept their fate. After the black-chinned tilapia... Escaping from irrigation canals or seawater diverted into aquaculture ponds, the black-chinned tilapia has spread widely. Despite all efforts to eradicate it from the ponds, the labor, fuel, and increased farming costs are unprofitable. The surviving fish suffer continuous losses, leading to debt and discouragement, forcing farmers to consider other occupations. Marine and environmental experts point out that it's never too late to solve the black-chinned tilapia problem, but all agencies must be serious about the issue. This includes surveys, assessments to obtain standardized scientific data, prioritizing outbreak areas, and implementing coordinated management strategies. This avoids haphazard approaches, such as determining appropriate tools, methods, and timing for managing black-chinned tilapia in each area. The major challenge lies not only in the black-chinned tilapia's threat to the ecosystem but also in its impact on the livelihoods of aquaculture farmers, with the problem expanding and becoming increasingly difficult to control.
