Meet RonBandup, a rap artist born and raised in the heart of Richmond, Virginia’s Jackson Ward, specifically the tough Gilpin Court Projects. Growing up in one of the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods, Ron faced the daily challenges of violence, poverty, and limited opportunities. Despite graduating high school with plans to join the Navy, life took a sharp turn when he got caught up in the street life. RonBandup’s journey hasn’t been easy. He survived a shooting where his car was riddled with bullets and some of his close friends were hit. He’s also spent time behind bars. But now Ron is home and focused, using music as a way to rebuild his life and be a positive role model for the community that shaped him. In this video, Ron’s story takes its next turn. He sits down with the Mayor of Richmond, Danny Avula, to talk about how the city is changing: Homicides at a seven-year low, new community centers, and why Richmond has to tell its own history to heal. Ron is now speaking at Virginia Union University on Black men’s mental health and becoming a real voice for his city.
