Learning Science in VR
We finally had what seems to be a successful integration of VR technology into a lesson. At first, I was quite surprised to learn that very little educational VR content was readily available for us to use. Even though the topic (cell structure) lent itself quite well to VR, we had to spend weeks looking for a VR activity to enhance students' understanding and learning. While VR app stores have abundant entertainment and gaming content, we found no applications that would be directly aligned with the topic and target standards. By the end of our search, we had three alternatives: 1) Create our own VR experience in Unity, which seemed unrealistic and unsustainable. 2) Purchase content/experiences from a company specializing in making such experiences. Having seen a few demo products, we realized that the activities were either insufficiently developed or barely aligned with what we wanted to accomplish. 3) Use YouTube 360-degree videos, an option that we eventually selected. While the third alternative was not ideal and did not realize the full potential of VR as it limited what students could experience to enhance media consumption, the project nevertheless yielded the desired results. It helped us get students to the desired outcome. Even though VR technology is widely marketed as a viable educational tool, it feels like it has a long way to go before it can realize its full potential in the classroom and become a prolific and easily accessible tool that significantly improves learning. At this stage, the meaningful integration of VR into a school requires a disproportionate amount of time and resources.
