Nazi officer who, while throwing kids into fire, ordered musicians to perform Mozart & Beethoven

SS General Fritz Katzmann was one of the most notorious figures behind the Holocaust in Eastern Europe, particularly in Galicia and the city of Lviv. As SS and Police Leader, Katzmann orchestrated some of the most brutal campaigns of extermination ever documented. From his early days in the SA and SS, his career was marked by unflinching loyalty to Nazi ideology and a ruthless commitment to its goals. He quickly rose through the ranks, gaining the trust of powerful figures like Sepp Dietrich and Heinrich Himmler. Appointed to Lviv in 1941 following Operation Barbarossa, Katzmann oversaw mass deportations, ghetto liquidations, and indiscriminate killings. His infamous Katzmann Report of 1943 coldly detailed the murder of over 434,000 Jews as if it were an administrative success. Victims were starved, tortured, deported to Bełżec, or shot in forests and streets. His deceptive tactics, such as using kindergartens to lure children to their deaths, and forcing Jewish orchestras to play during executions, reveal the psychological cruelty at the heart of Nazi terror. He later supervised atrocities at Stutthof concentration camp, including the construction of gas chambers. Even as the Nazis began erasing evidence of their crimes, Katzmann’s death squads burned corpses to hide mass graves. By the war's end, nearly 620,000 Jews from Galicia had been murdered. Unlike many other war criminals, Katzmann escaped justice. After Germany's defeat, he lived under a false name in West Germany. Only on his deathbed in 1957 did he admit his true identity. Despite orchestrating the deaths of hundreds of thousands, Fritz Katzmann was never tried nor punished.
