Walking through this ancient Mayan city was like stepping back in time. Chichén Itzá was once one of the most important political, economic, and religious centers of the Maya civilization. The iconic Temple of Kukulcán, also known as El Castillo, is an incredible masterpiece of architecture and astronomy. During the spring and autumn equinoxes, the sunlight creates the illusion of a serpent descending the pyramid’s staircase, symbolizing the feathered serpent god, Kukulcán. As I explored this fascinating site, I learned about the incredible knowledge the Maya had of mathematics, astronomy, engineering, and their highly organized society. Every temple, column, and stone tells a story of a civilization that continues to inspire the world today.
