SA skills capacity | What do young people need to learn in order to be employed - Part 1
Statistics South Africa (STATS SA) says the expanded definition of unemployment, which includes those who are discouraged or not searching for employment for different reasons is at 42% of the country's eligible workforce, also calculated by age. This number does not only constitute unskilled and uneducated people but also includes matriculants and graduates. South Africa's unemployment problem has been well documented long before the outbreak of the coronavirus. Some studies attribute the problem to inadequate education and lack of skills. In 2018, the Department of Higher Education and Training contracted the Human Sciences Research Council to research and establish a mechanism to support skills planning and training of students in preparation for the labour market.
