Following severe monsoon rains, a devastating cloudburst triggered a sudden flash flood and heavy landslide at the under-construction 540 MW Kwar Hydroelectric Project site. Tons of mud, boulders, and slush crashed into the Tail Race Tunnel (TRT) premises, completely burying multiple construction trucks, water tankers, dozers, and earthmoving machinery. Key Highlights of the Incident: Heavy Equipment Damage: Dozens of project vehicles and operational machinery are trapped deep under the debris. Core Structures Safe: Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh confirmed that despite the material damage, the primary project structures remain completely intact. No Casualties: Fortunately, no loss of human life or injuries has been reported from the site. NH-244 Blocked: The flash flood washed down massive amounts of debris onto the Doda-Kishtwar Highway (NH-244), completely halting vehicular traffic. Restoration Underway: Local authorities have deployed heavy machinery to clear the slush from the highway and rescue stranded vehicles. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued localized flash flood and landslide warnings for vulnerable hilly terrains across the Jammu region.
