Goa, São João is a vibrant Catholic festival celebrated every year on 24 June in honor of Saint John the Baptist. According to the Bible, when Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth, the unborn John the Baptist leaped for joy in Elizabeth's womb. This joyful moment is reflected in the festival's lively traditions. Some of the most popular São João customs include: 🌿 Wearing kopels (crowns made of flowers, leaves, and fruits). 💦 Jumping into wells, ponds, or rivers as a symbol of joy and the arrival of the monsoon. 🎶 Singing traditional Goan songs and enjoying music and dancing. 🍛 Sharing festive Goan food and drinks with family and friends. 🤝 Bringing communities together to celebrate friendship, gratitude, and the rainy season. Today, Goan communities around the world—including those in the UK—celebrate São João to keep their culture and traditions alive, making it a joyful occasion for family, friends, and the wider community.
