In Other Words
As part of Cruinniú na nÓg 2020 artist/folklorist Michael Fortune has been commissioned to produce a new body of work with young travellers in the County. Produced in conjunction with STAG (Southside Traveller Action Group) the project explores the traveller Cant/Gammon language from the perspective of a child. The project is elegently simple but deeply personal at the same time, as the children and their families share their words with Michael. In the video piece we get to see and hear words that many of us have never heard before, opening new conversations while also acting as a tool for the teaching of language to travellers themselves. What adds to this, is the fact that this work has all been produced 100% remotely between the artist in his home in Wexford and young people in their homes in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County.
