Lesson 1 Section 6: Speed of Recitation
Explanation: This section explains the Marātib al-Qirā'ah (Levels-Speeds of Qur'anic Recitation). The key principle is that Tajwīd must be preserved at every speed. The difference lies only in the pace, not in the quality of pronunciation. Overview of Recitation Speeds Speed Arabic Term Description Main Use Slow At-Taḥqīq (التحقيق) Very slow recitation with maximum precision and care Learning and teaching Medium At-Tadwīr (التدوير) Moderate speed between slow and fast Normal recitation Fast Al-Ḥadr (الحدر) Fast recitation while maintaining Tajwīd Reviewing large portions of Qur'an ________________________________________ 1. At-Taḥqīq (التحقيق) Definition At-Taḥqīq is the slowest and most deliberate form of recitation, giving every letter and rule its complete right. The term comes from the Arabic root ḥaqqaqa (حقّق), meaning: • To verify • To establish with certainty • To perform something accurately and correctly Characteristics The reciter must: • Give each letter its proper articulation point (Makharij) • Apply all letter characteristics (Ṣifāt) • Fully observe rules of Madd (lengthening) • Perfect Hamzah pronunciation • Apply Tashdīd correctly • Observe Idghām accurately • Apply Fatḥ, Imālah, Sukūn, and Harakāt properly • Avoid both deficiency and exaggeration Purpose At-Taḥqīq is primarily used for: • Learning Tajwīd • Teaching students • Correcting pronunciation • Training the tongue Warning Against Excess Scholars emphasize that slowness should not become exaggeration. The scholar Abu Amr al-Dani criticized practices such as: • Excessively stretching sounds • Separating letters unnecessarily • Over-exaggerating vowels • Producing unnatural pronunciations Such practices fall outside the methodology of the early scholars. 2. Al-Ḥadr (الحدر) Definition Al-Ḥadr is the fast recitation of the Qur'an while maintaining all Tajwīd rules. Linguistically, the word means: • To move quickly • To descend rapidly from a higher place Characteristics Even at high speed, the reciter must preserve: • Correct articulation points • Letter characteristics • Madd rules • Proper pronunciation Essential Principle Two things must remain balanced: 1. Speed of recitation 2. Accuracy of Tajwīd Neither should be sacrificed for the other. Common Mistake Many reciters increase speed but begin: • Swallowing letters • Shortening Madd incorrectly • Merging sounds improperly When this happens, the recitation is no longer proper Al-Ḥadr. ________________________________________ 3. At-Tadwīr (التدوير) Definition At-Tadwīr is the middle speed between At-Taḥqīq and Al-Ḥadr. Characteristics • Neither excessively slow nor excessively fast • Comfortable and balanced pace • Complete preservation of Tajwīd Practical Use This is the speed most commonly used by: • Imams • Teachers • Skilled reciters It combines: • Clarity • Beauty • Efficiency Tartīl (الترتيل) Important Point Tartīl is not primarily a speed; it is a quality of recitation. Allah says in the Qur'an: "And recite the Qur'an with Tartīl." Tartīl means: • Clear recitation • Ordered recitation • Measured recitation • Recitation governed by Tajwīd Therefore, a person may recite: • At-Taḥqīq with Tartīl • At-Tadwīr with Tartīl • Al-Ḥadr with Tartīl As long as Tajwīd is preserved. Relationship Between the Speeds Slowest --------------------------------- to --------------- Fastest At-Taḥqīq → At-Tadwīr → Al-Ḥadr - - ----------Tartīl----- Tartīl accompanies all three speeds when Tajwīd is correctly applied. ________________________________________ Difference Between At-Taḥqīq and Tartīl Some scholars distinguish between them: At-Taḥqīq Tartīl Used mainly during learning and training Used after mastery is achieved Very slow May be slow, medium, or fast Focus on teaching correct pronunciation Focus on beautiful, measured recitation Educational stage Mature stage of recitation Thus: At-Taḥqīq = learning with maximum precision. Tartīl = reciting properly and beautifully after mastering the rules. Summary • At-Taḥqīq: Slow recitation for learning and perfection. • At-Tadwīr: Moderate recitation balancing clarity and flow. • Al-Ḥadr: Fast recitation without sacrificing Tajwīd. • Tartīl: The quality of proper, measured recitation that can exist at any of the three speeds. The central message of this chapter is that the speed may change, but the correctness of Tajwīd must never change.
