Twitter @juangangel Synopsis: Love and passion for animals awaken in human beings a sense of pride and respect for them. Each animal evokes a different feeling. This time, we'll meet Jorge, a dog lover, especially of a breed he has worked with for over 15 years, helping them become some of the best show dogs in the world. HISTORY: Its origins are German. 19th-century hunters needed a dog with an excellent sense of smell, a good tracker, and capable of retrieving game both in the water and on land. For this purpose, they used breeds such as the Old Spanish Pointer, the St. Hubert Hound, the Foxhound, and the English Pointer, among others. The result was a dog with an extraordinary sense of smell and a natural retriever. It is also an excellent companion for hunters on foot. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS: This is an aesthetically striking dog due to its fine bearing and well-proportioned build. It is very intelligent, always eager to please its owners, and full of vitality. Its courage and self-assurance make it an excellent guard dog. COAT: The coat is short and dense, and should be harsh to the touch. On the head, including the ears, it will be finer and shorter. It is slightly longer on the underside of the tail. It should cover the entire body. COLOR: Brown without markings. Brown with small white spots or mottling on the chest and legs. Brown roan with a brown head, brown patches, or brown mottling. Light brown roan with a brown head, brown mottling with or without patches. In this color, the brown is less prominent, and white predominates. Black with the same shades as the brown or roan colors. Tan markings are permitted. Long or striped white markings on the forehead and mottled lips are also permitted. HEAD: Well-balanced, corresponding in length and volume to the body shape and sex. With a broad, slightly domed skull, a shallow occipital protuberance, a shallow frontal furrow, and a moderately developed stop. The nose protrudes slightly, with wide, mobile nostrils, typically brown in color. The muzzle is long and deep, with sufficient strength to facilitate retrieving game. The nasal bridge shows a slight convexity; this will be more pronounced in males. A straight nasal bridge is acceptable, although less desirable. Lips are well-pigmented and not excessively droopy. The jaw is robust with a perfect, regular, and complete set of teeth, meeting in a scissor bite. There should be 42 healthy teeth set vertically in the jaws. Cheeks are strong and well-muscled. Medium-sized eyes, neither protruding nor sunken. The ideal color is brown. Ears of medium length, set high, smooth, hanging flat and close to the sides of the head, with rounded tips. NECK: Of proportional length to the body, it gradually widens towards the shoulders. The nape is muscular and slightly arched. BODY: With a very pronounced withers, the back has good muscle tone. The spinous processes should be covered by muscle. The back is short and broad, and may be straight or slightly arched. The croup is long without ending abruptly, sloping slightly towards the tail. With a chest deeper than it is wide, the forechest is well-defined, and the sternum, when retracted, is level with the elbows. The ribs are well-sprung, with the rear ribs sloping downwards. FORELIMBS: The front legs, viewed from the front, are straight and parallel; in profile, they are well-placed under the body. The shoulder blades are sloping, well laid back, and retracted. HINDLIMBS: Viewed from behind, they are parallel and straight with good angulation. The thighs are long and muscular, with good angulation between the hip and thigh. TAIL: Set high, it is important to dock the tail for the dog's use in hunting. CARE: Requires regular brushing. Bathing should only be done when necessary. This is a very healthy breed, but among the most common health issues are epilepsy, hip dysplasia, eye problems, skin diseases, and cancerous lesions. TRAINING: This breed learns easily, although it can be somewhat stubborn when it wants to be, so its owner should have prior experience with other dogs. It does not respond well to harsh or severe training methods. ACTIVITY: This is a very active breed that needs exercise once or twice a day. Without sufficient exercise, it can become destructive. It is the perfect pet for an active family. LIFE: Between 12 and 15 years. Source: http://www.perros.com/razas/pointer-a...
