However, this transit journey was filled with unexpected chaos. Unable to get a direct bus ticket to Don Mueang Airport, I had to detour through downtown Bangkok and take a Grab motorbike. On the back of the speeding bike, my helmet was blown off by the wind, forcing me into a rather dangerous "helmet-less" ride. This was followed by a Thai Lion Air flight delay, causing me to almost miss the check-in time at a strict but highly cost-effective Japanese-run hostel. Fortunately, Chiang Mai's unique, laid-back vibe quickly cured the previous day's exhaustion. The next morning, strolling by the ancient Tha Phae Gate, the weathered red brick walls, blue skies, and flocks of pigeons created a stunningly picturesque scene. As a microcosm of a Buddhist country, the numerous temples scattered across Chiang Mai exude a profound sense of peace.
