Diagnose Your Ball Flight — Face Angle, Club Path & Face-to-Path

Diagnose Your Ball Flight — Face Angle, Club Path & Face-to-Path Your golf ball is giving you clues on every shot. The key is learning how to read them. In this video, we use start line and ball curvature to diagnose what was likely happening with your clubface and club path at impact. You will learn how face angle influences where the golf ball starts, how club path combines with the face to create curvature, and why two shots that finish in the same place may require completely different adjustments. We break down nine common ball flights for a right-handed golfer: • Fade, straight shot and draw • Slice, push and push slice • Hook, pull and pull hook For each shot, we examine: • Where the ball starts • Whether the club path is in-to-out, neutral or out-to-in • Whether the face is open, closed or matched to the path • Example TrackMan face-angle, club-path and face-to-path numbers • The most likely issue a golfer should investigate TrackMan identifies face angle as the biggest influence on the golf ball’s starting direction. The start line therefore gives us our best clue about where the face was pointed at impact. The curve then helps us understand the relationship between the face and the club path: Curve right: Face open to path Curve left: Face closed to path Minimal curve: Face and path closely matched A slice, push and push slice may all finish right of the target, but they are not the same shot. The same applies to a hook, pull and pull hook on the left side. Instead of diagnosing your swing based only on where the ball finishes, ask two questions: Where did the ball start? Which way did it curve? You do not need access to a launch monitor to begin identifying your tendencies. However, a TrackMan unit can speed up the diagnosis by providing the exact Face Angle, Club Path and Face to Path numbers behind each ball flight.
