At the turn of the year 2022 there were major changes to EMS services in Wittmund County, state of Lower Saxony, Germany. So far there were the following providers: Wittmund County EMS with a station in the town of Wittmund Emergency Medical Service Ackermann with a station in Friedeburg, covering the south of the county Promedica Emergency Medical Services Coast with 3 stations, located in Esens, Neuharlingersiel and Westerholt in the north of the county German Red Cross Central Hesse running the stations on the 2 North Sea islands Langeoog and Spiekeroog, contracted by Wittmund County. Both Promedica and Ackermann were private EMS providers, both with open-ended contracts. According to a judicial decision this legal form of contract is vulnerable as it doesn't meet the EU services directive - and one interested party called attention to that issue. Technically all services would be exposed to EU-wide public invitation to tender every few years (I think it was 5 years) with the County EMS provider having no power of the result. For that reason they decided to municipalize both private EMS provider to have control about the outcome. Both EMS providers had their contracts terminated by the end of 2021. Emergency Medical Services Ackermann was serving for entire 95 years. It was a family run business and it was the oldest private EMS provider in Germany Promedica Medical Services Coast was serving for 29 years. This is their final radio call, thanking all colleagues at Command Center East Frisia, Wittmund County, Emergency Medical Service Ackermann, surrounding hospitals, police department and all other emergency services for the good teamwork.
