"I Shoot Better" - The Teenage Girl Who Hunted Nazi Officers on Moscow's Streets On Her Bike

Jannetje Johanna "Hannie" Schaft was a shy, bookish law student in Amsterdam when the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands began. Horrified by the persecution of her Jewish friends, she joined the Dutch resistance, eventually becoming an armed assassin for the Raad van Verzet (Council of Resistance). Hannie and her comrades famously targeted high-ranking Nazi officials and Dutch collaborators, carrying out daring daytime assassinations from their bicycles. With her striking red hair, Hannie became a highly recognizable and fiercely hunted target by the Gestapo, known simply as "the girl with the red hair." To evade capture, she dyed her hair black and wore plain glasses, continuing her dangerous courier runs and sabotage missions. Tragically, just three weeks before the liberation of the Netherlands, she was stopped at a routine checkpoint, where guards discovered a pistol and illegal resistance newspapers in her bag. During her transport to prison, the red roots of her growing hair betrayed her true identity. Enduring days of brutal interrogation without giving up her comrades, Hannie was taken to the sand dunes near the coast and executed by a firing squad. According to legend, when the first executioner's bullet only grazed her, she defiantly told her killers, "I shoot better," before a second man fatally shot her. Hannie Schaft is the only woman buried among 421 male resistance fighters in the Dutch Honorary Cemetery, her gravestone bearing the simple, powerful inscription: Zij diende (She served).
