HDR vs SDR (In-Depth Technical Lesson)
In this video, I take a deep and honest look at HDR vs SDR and break down many of the most common myths and misunderstandings surrounding image quality, black levels, shadow detail, and what HDR actually represents in real-world viewing. (Timestamps) 0:00 - Introduction 0:29 - What is HDR? 1:47 - The Inconsistency’s of HDR 5:34 - Use SDR instead? 6:20 - Choosing between SDR and HDR 9:50 - is HDR bad? 11:32 - Why I prefer SDR 13:26 - when is HDR actually worse then SDR? 16:18 - Overall Conclusion 18:00 - What are your thoughts on all of this? ————————————————————————————— A lot of people assume that HDR automatically means better image quality, deeper blacks, and more visible detail in dark scenes. In reality, the situation is far more nuanced. A significant portion of today’s HDR content is still SDR-based material that has been tone mapped, meaning that the main differences often come from highlight handling and peak brightness rather than genuinely new detail in dark areas. Because of this, HDR can sometimes look inconsistent, exaggerated, or even worse than SDR especially when settings are not correctly configured. Throughout the video, I explain why SDR is often more consistent and reliable, particularly when it comes to: • Stable and predictable grayscale • Accurate gamma tracking • Correct midtone balance • Fewer issues like black level raise and near-black artifacts SDR is simply a format that is easier to display correctly, and when properly calibrated, it often aligns more closely with the creator’s original intent without relying on complex tone mapping behavior. That said, this video is not about dismissing HDR. When HDR is properly set up, viewed with true HDR content, and displayed on a capable panel with correct calibration, HDR can deliver impressive results especially in highlights, specular detail, and overall dynamic range. The problem is that many comparisons between HDR and SDR are done incorrectly, leading to misleading conclusions. I also discuss why HDR and SDR are fundamentally different formats, why SDR content should be viewed in SDR, and why forcing SDR material into HDR modes can reduce accuracy rather than improve it. Proper setup of near-black, grayscale, midtones, and white point is critical whether you prefer a reference D65 white point or a personal adjustment that suits your viewing environment. The goal of this video is to help both HDR and SDR viewers better understand what they’re seeing on their screens, why certain scenes look the way they do, and how to avoid common pitfalls when evaluating image quality. Instead of focusing on hype or assumptions, this video focuses on accuracy, consistency, and understanding how displays actually work. Whether you primarily watch HDR or SDR content, this breakdown will give you a clearer perspective on what really matters and why “better” isn’t always as simple as a format label. ———————————————————————————— Becoming a Member on the channel is only 90 cents monthly!
