David Laffey's Emigrant Story 'The Journey' from Galway Ireland to New York in 1915
n Emigrants Story of a man named David Laffey Windfield Road Menlough County Galway. The story is told by David's son Mike Laffey from Mahwah New Jersey USA aged 93. David grew up on a rural farm in East Galway. He had one brother John and one sister Mary to parents Michael Laffey and Ellen Mahoney. There wasn't room for two families to survive on the farm and the family had to make a sad decision that impacted all of them. David emigrated to America in 1915 along with two of his neighbours. This is a story of survival, its rises and falls in America during the 1920s and 1930s when Wall Street crash had a major impact on their family. Mike, David's son returned to Ireland for the first time in 1983 and has made the trip back 'home' many times since with his wife Ann and his children. This footage was recorded by Emma Laffey on Mike's trip home in 2024 and it was edited and produced by GKMedia. You will see in the video Mike walking in his father's footsteps going to the old homestead and walking the lane his father walked to school. Mike reminisces about his father as he watches the animals in the fields. His father never got the chance to return home after he left in 1915. This is his story
