Kenya's blood shortage fuels preventable maternal deaths, experts warn
A woman suffering severe postpartum haemorrhage can bleed to death within just 10 to 15 minutes if she does not receive immediate treatment. For thousands of mothers, those few minutes determine whether they will watch their newborn grow up or become another preventable maternal death statistic. Yet one of the biggest obstacles to saving these women is not a lack of medical expertise but something far more basic: access to safe blood. According to Professor Moses Obimbo, Project Lead of the National Postpartum Haemorrhage (NPPH) Initiative and the PPH Foundation, between two and four out of every 10 women who die from severe bleeding after childbirth lose their lives because blood for an emergency transfusion is either unavailable or cannot be accessed in time.
