Among these, a man from Ceará named Colonel José Júlio de Andrade stood out, establishing himself as the largest landowner in the world, acquiring approximately 3.5 million hectares of land. It was opposed by the Tenentist revolt, which forced him to sell his company Jarí to a group of Portuguese businessmen in 1948. Later, the company was sold to the American millionaire Daniel Ludwig. Its origins date back to the time of the colonization of the Jarí River, also receiving more recent influences from the implementation of the Jarí Forestry project in 1967, conceived by the American millionaire Daniel Ludwig. He intended to replace the native forest with a homogeneous plantation of a plant called gmelina arborea for the manufacture of cellulose, and also intended to become the world's largest producer of beef, pork and rice. As it was a large-scale project, the company needed a lot of labor. Motivated by nationalist fervor (1960s) and seeking better living conditions, many workers went to the region. A large part was hired temporarily and indirectly, by contractors, who did not guarantee them labor rights. Dismissed by the company, they lacked the resources for housing, let alone to return to their places of origin. Most were forced to live on the banks of the river, in stilt houses, without the minimum conditions for hygiene and survival. This led to Beiradão becoming known as the largest river slum in the world, and in addition to high rates of prostitution, it was also considered one of the poorest and most violent populations in Brazil at the time. Laranjal do Jari, Amapá Located in the southern region of Amapá, Laranjal do Jari was created by Federal Law No. 7,639, of December 6, 1987. It borders the state of Pará, more specifically Monte Dourado, a district of the municipality of Almerim (PA), located on the other side of the Jari River. It is located 320 kilometers from the capital and access is via the so-called southern axis of BR-156, a still unpaved section of the federal highway, with river access also possible via the Jari River. Laranjal do Jari, with an area of ​​31,170.3 km², has an estimated population of 45,712 inhabitants. It borders the municipalities of Vitória do Jari, Mazagão, Pedra Branca do Amapari, and Oiapoque, as well as the state of Pará and the countries of Suriname and French Guiana, due to its vast geographical area. Economically, Laranjal was known for housing workers who worked in the manufacture of cellulose (raw material for paper) on the Pará side of the border. Today, the sector has declined, and industrial activity no longer drives the economy as it once did. Laranjal do Jari also houses a cooperative that sells raw materials (Brazil nut oil and white resin) to a large cosmetics industry in São Paulo. The region is prominent in plant extraction. Jari River The Jari River is a watercourse that flows through the states of Pará and Amapá in Brazil. It flows into the Amazon River. It was an important river in the colonization of the Northern Amazon region, serving as a transport route for Brazil nuts and other products extracted from the region's forests. Monte Dourado, Pará The district of Monte Dourado is located 73 kilometers from the center of Almeirim. The locality is on the border with Amapá, separated only by the Jari River. A remnant of the Jari Project, the locality has an industrial complex that in 2014 began producing soluble cellulose, a product with potential applications in various sectors. This, in turn, is transported to the Port of Munguba by the Jari Railway, an industrial railway that crosses the district. It has great hydroelectric potential in the Santo Antônio da Cachoeira and Itapeuara region. On its banks, the Jari Project developed from 1967 onwards. This river is home to the Santo Antônio do Jari Hydroelectric Power Plant, with 373 MW of installed capacity, located between the municipalities of Almeirim (PA) and Laranjal do Jari (AP). The Jari River forms the border between the states of Pará and Amapá. On one side is the municipality of Laranjal do Jari, in the south of the state of Amapá, and less than 5 minutes away is Monte Dourado, a district of Almeirim, on the Pará side. The main means of transportation between the two municipalities is by means of a water transport known as a "catraia" by the locals.
