Brahms - Symphony No 3 - Toscanini, NBC (1938)

The disc also contains the Variations on a theme by Haydn op. 56a (already available on YouTube:    • Brahms, Haydn Variations op. 56a - Toscani...   ). The sound quality of these records is quite limited: unfortunately I don't have the full NBC broadcast, which would certainly be of much higher quality. I corrected the very flat pitch. In the concert of October 15, 1938 Toscanini performed in the order: Tallis Fantasia by Vaughan Williams (   • Toscanini conducts Vaughan Williams "Talli...   ), the present symphony, Notturno (   • Martucci : Notturno - Toscanini - NBC (1938)   ) and Novelletta (   • Martucci : Novelletta - Toscanini - NBC (1...   ) by Martucci, Romeo and Juliet by Tchaikovsky (not present on YouTube; but the whole concert was released by Guild: GHCD 2211/12). Robert C. Marsh reports the Maestro's opinion that an execution of the Third that approached his ideal could be obtained by assembling first movement and Finale of 10-15, 1938, Andante of 03-31, 1946 and Poco allegretto of 11-20, 1948. La qualità sonora di questi dischi è piuttosto limitata: purtroppo non dispongo del broadcast completo della NBC, che sicuramente sarebbe di qualità molto più elevata. Ho corretto il pitch calante. Nel concerto del 15 ottobre 1938 Toscanini eseguì nell’ordine: Tallis Fantasia di Vaughan Williams (    • Toscanini conducts Vaughan Williams "Talli...   ), la presente sinfonia, Notturno (   • Martucci : Notturno - Toscanini - NBC (1938)   ) e Novelletta (   • Martucci : Novelletta - Toscanini - NBC (1...   ) di Martucci, Romeo e Giulietta di Ciaikovski (non presente su YouTube; ma l'intero concerto è stato pubblicato da Guild: GHCD 2211/12). Robert C. Marsh riporta l’opinione del Maestro che un’esecuzione della Terza che si avvicinasse al suo ideale si poteva ottenere assemblando il primo tempo e il Finale del 15.10.1938, l’Andante del 31.03.1946 e il Poco allegretto del 20.11.1948.
