Brazilian Funk: Born in the Favelas of Rio

This mini documentary is a quick look at the very popular genre of Funk here in Brazil. This music style has little to do with the Funk/Soul that came out of the US but more to do with Miami Bass music of the 1980s and early 90s. This style was created in the favelas of Rio but I will interview some people here in São Paulo where it has become very commercially popular. Because of its sometimes violent and mysoginistic lyrics it is often seen in a negative light, but we must still appreciate the style as it comes from very poverty stricken areas of Brazil, the favela. Este mini documentário é um breve resumo sobre o Funk, um gênero muito popular aqui no Brasil. Este estilo musical tem pouco a ver com o Funk / Soul que veio dos EUA, mas tem mais a ver com a música Miami Bass dos anos 80 e início dos anos 90. O Funk Brasileiro é um estilo que foi criado nas favelas do Rio de Janeiro, então para entender melhor este ritmo que se popularizou entre os jovens de periferia, eu entrevistei algumas pessoas aqui em São Paulo, cidade onde o funk se tornou muito comercial. Devido as letras serem muitas vezes violenta e machista, o funk é frequentemente visto sob uma luz negativa, mas ainda assim devemos apreciar este estilo que nasceu nas áreas pobres do Brasil.
