A Weaver’s Story

Mohammad Jamal Hossain has been weaving since he was 12 years old. He comes from a long line of Jamdani weavers. This film looks at Jamal’s life, his hardships and difficulties he faces in producing Jamdani sarees. Know more about the Jamdani Festival at Bengal Shilpalay, Dhanmondi - a celebration of the proud heritage of Jamdani weaving in Bangladesh and the skill and creativity shared by its weavers: The Jamdani Festival was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Minister for Education Dr Dipu Moni at 5 PM, on 6 September 2019, at Bengal Shilpalay, Dhanmondi. The Hon'ble Minister of State for Cultural Affairs Mr K M Khalid, Mayor of Narayanganj Dr Selina Hayat Ivy and the President of the World Crafts Council Asia-Pacific Region Dr Ghada Hijjawi-Qaddumi was present on the occasion as special guests. The President of the National Crafts Council of Bangladesh Mr Rafiqul Islam chaired the inaugural ceremony. The Mastercraftspersons Award ceremony were given on the same day to honour the most gifted master weaver and apprentice for their skills and contributions to the community.
