"A Memorial to the Pioneer Temple Family": The Early History of Temple City, 1923-1930
In May 1923 Walter P. Temple established the Town of Temple on 300 acres of land previously owned by his family. The development, renamed Temple City in 1928, began at the peak of a boom but, by the onset of the Great Depression, Temple's financial problems forced him to sell his interest. Join Museum Director Paul R. Spitzzeri for a deep dive into the early history of the community, including its race restrictions, the unintended consequences of a state property assessment law, and the ups and downs of a struggling town now commemorating its centennial.
