Nonnenmattweiher im Kleinen Wiesental im Schwarzwald

The Kleine Wiesental valley in the Black Forest offers a charming high-altitude hike with magnificent mountain panoramas, leading from the Stations of the Cross past the Nonnenmattweiher rock formation to the legendary lake. The Nonnenmattweiher is a relic of the Ice Age with a rich and storied history; it invites visitors to linger. The trail continues past the fishing hut to the Haldenhof farm. The origin of this cirque lake dates back to the glaciation of the Köhlgarten massif during the last Ice Age. After the lake likely silted up by the Middle Ages, it was subsequently dammed. During this process, part of the peaty cirque floor broke away, creating a floating peat island. Today, the lake is almost 325 meters long, 200 meters wide, and up to 7 meters deep. The nature reserve of the same name covers approximately 70 hectares. According to legend, a nunnery is said to have sunk into the lake. ] , ...
