The history of the Vandals is unique in its own way. Far removed from the Roman Empire, the Vandals remained largely unnoticed by the Romans for a long time, and even when they did make contact, it was only brief border skirmishes that had no serious consequences. In the 5th century, no one could have imagined that this tribe would travel such a long way: from the area between the Vistula and Oder rivers to the sultry lands of North Africa, where the Vandals would finally find their place in the new, changed world of late antiquity.
