Sisters of Emmanuel, Maragua in Muranga, Kenya
The Sisters of Emmanuel, an indigenous congregation from the Catholic Diocese of Murang’a, was founded in 1989 by Bishop Peter Kairo, Archbishop Emeritus of Nyeri. Their mission focuses on uplifting the dignity of the poor, with schools that offer free meals and education to children from dysfunctional families who cannot afford to pay. To sustain these efforts, the Sisters run a poultry farming project in Maragua, Murang’a County. Every six weeks, they supply over 3,000 broilers to Quality Meat Suppliers. This initiative was first conceived during their participation in the Sisters’ Blended Value Project (SBVP) in 2023. Today, they provide full education scholarships to several students with proceeds from the poultry farm and are working towards scaling up their operations to supply over 30,000 broilers every six weeks.
