During the honey flow, only breeding colonies, which raise queens, reside here. ► To perform grafting, it's necessary to select suitable larvae. Both worker bees and the queen emerge from the same larva, but everything depends on the feeding regimen determined by the bees themselves. It is the bees themselves who decide whether or not a new queen will emerge. Once a frame containing suitable larvae is found, it is shaken free of bees with a goose feather, sealed in a plastic bag to prevent drying, and then taken to the laboratory. ► The chief queen breeding specialist at the apiary is Mansur's wife, Leysan. She finds the newly hatched larvae and transfers the future queens to special combs. This is not an easy job; good eyesight and skill are required. ► Once the special frame is completely filled with larvae, it is transferred to a "nurse"—a special hive where the bees will build their queen cells. ► The frame containing the completed queen cells is removed again and taken to the laboratory. There, a special device called "curlers" is placed on the queen cells, into which the queens are extracted and transferred to an incubator. The incubator is kept at a constant temperature of 35 degrees Celsius. Constant monitoring is required, and as soon as a queen hatches, she is removed from the incubator immediately. After removal, the queen is weighed, tagged, and then placed in a cage. Any queens weighing less than 190 grams at birth are subject to culling. ► The drones are kept in a large mesh box called the paternal colony, from which they cannot fly. This is where the drones needed for the queen's flight are obtained. ► The apiary practices instrumental insemination of bees, so the drones are also used for semen collection. To do this, semen is collected from 8-10 drones using a special pipette to inseminate one queen bee. ► The queen is anesthetized with carbon dioxide and placed in a special flask, which is mounted on a machine. After insemination, the queen's wings are clipped, as she is unaware that she has already been inseminated and could fly away.
