And when Moses said to his people, "Allah commands you to sacrifice a cow." They said, "Are you mocking us?" Moses said, "I seek refuge in Allah from being among the ignorant." (2:67) They said, "Call upon your Lord for us to make clear to us the attributes of the cow." He said, “(Allah) said, ‘It is a cow, neither old nor young, but somewhere between these two (middle age). (Upon this explanation) do what you are commanded.’” (2:68) They said, “Call upon your Lord for us to make clear to us its color.” He said, “(Allah) said, ‘It is a bright yellow cow, a light color, a relief to those who look upon it.’” (2:69) They said, “Call upon your Lord for us to make clear to us its nature. The cow has caused us confusion. But if Allah wills, we will surely do what is right.” (2/Al-Baqarah, 70) He said, “Allah says: ‘A cow/bull is a bull, without spot or blemish, not employed in plowing or watering the fields.’” They said, “Now you have spoken the truth.” So they slaughtered the cow/bull. But they almost did not slaughter it. (2/Al-Baqarah, 71) If they had obeyed the moment they heard the command, they would have fulfilled the command by slaughtering any cow. As they persisted in obeying, Allah (swt) made things difficult. The conditions became so severe that they almost lost any cow to slaughter and were doomed to perish. The aspect of this story that applies to us is this: While learning Islam, some commands and prohibitions may be burdensome to our souls. The way to ease it is to take steps. The most powerful prayer is to respond to the command. When a servant expresses his will, Allah's (swt) help and ease follows. (See 4/An-Nisa, 66-70) (Remember!) And when you killed a person and accused one another, Allah is the One Who reveals what you concealed. (2/Al-Baqarah, 72) We commanded, "Strike the dead with a part of the animal." (He spoke and named the murderer.) Thus Allah revives the dead and shows you His signs so that you may understand. (2/Al-Baqarah, 73) After this, your hearts hardened. Your hearts are like stones, even harder than stones. Yet, there are rocks from which rivers gush out, and some split open and water comes out from them, and some fall down in awe of Allah. And Allah is not oblivious to what you do.
