Two and a half billion years ago, Earth's air contained no oxygen at all—only nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane, painting the sky a dull orange, just like Titan today. The ocean wasn't blue, but greenish-red: dissolved iron floated peacefully in the anoxic water. There was no ozone layer, no UV protection—only microbial mats and stromatolites, rock cushions that bacteria have been building layer after layer for three and a half billion years. But it was in this slime that cyanobacteria mastered photosynthesis and began releasing a waste gas into the ocean—oxygen—useless to themselves and deadly to all their neighbors.
