How did the Normans actually control England, given that most of its population wanted them gone? In 1066 William the Conqueror successfully invaded England, won the Battle of Hastings, and was crowned king, but he had to spend the next several years working to ensure that he kept the kingdom he had won at Hastings. From ensuring a loyal, Norman, aristocracy, to building many of England's most famous castles, to waging war against his Anglo-Saxon people to force their loyalty, William the Conqueror used every trick in the book to remain in power, and ensured that his dynasty would continue to rule England into the centuries to come.
