The Panzer 1 was the first German tank in its modern form. Between 1935 and 1936, 1,175 Panzer IA vehicles were built, and 15 of them were sold to China. However, they were eventually replaced by larger and better tanks such as the 38(t) and the Panzer III. When Operation Barbarossa began, 300 of these were still operational, but by 1942, a program was implemented to use this chassis for other purposes. Two additional tanks in the Panzer I series were built shortly afterward.
