Gateshead Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Tyne and Wear, and directly opposite Newcastle on the south bank of the River Tyne, is the town of Gateshead. The name 'Gateshead' literally means 'goat's head' or specifically 'headland or hill frequented by wild goats'. Coal mining began in Gateshead from as early as the 14th century. This peaked in the 17th century before going into decline, although the last pit remained open until 1927. Gateshead thrived during the Industrial Revolution with the emergence of new industries, in particular chemicals, iron and locomotive manufacture. The 19th century saw a surge in population from 8,597 in 1801 to 85,692 in 1891. This influx of workers caused a housing shortage still felt into the 20th century. Much of the jobs in Gateshead in the 19th century came from the locomotive works in the town, which became the manufacturing headquarters of North Eastern Railway. In 1844 Gateshead railway station opened. This eventually closed in 1981 at around the same time as the opening of Gateshead Interchange, which forms part of the Tyne and Wear Metro to this day. In 1854 an explosion in a chemical warehouse in Gateshead, followed by a major fire, destroyed much of the town and caused great damage to neighbouring Newcastle. This resulted in 53 deaths and over 400 injuries. Many buildings on both banks of the Tyne were destroyed, hence why the area around Hillgate and surrounding streets is somewhat sparse save for a few modern buildings. In 1862 The song 'Blaydon Races' was written by a Gateshead music hall performer, Geordie Ridley. The song, written in Geordie dialect, is frequently sung at St James' Park by Newcastle United fans. In 1998 the Angel of the North sculpture, designed by Antony Gormley, was installed by the A1 to the south of Gateshead town centre. It is 20 metres (66 ft) tall, with wings measuring 54 metres (177 ft) across, making it the largest sculpture in Britain. In 2001 The Gateshead Millennium Bridge was opened. Seen at the very start of the video, this is one of seven bridges that cross the Tyne into Newcastle. In 2004 The Sage Gateshead, designed by Norman Foster, was opened as a venue for music and the performing arts in December. This is the big structure seen around eight seconds into the video on the left hand side. Famous people from Gateshead include Brian Johnson, Steve Cram, Chris Waddle and Paul Gascoigne. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
