Histoire d'Ici: Chateau de Chalucet

Today, we're going to talk about fortresses, brigands, and augmented reality. Let's head to Chalucet Castle in Haute-Vienne, located 10 km south of Limoges. Admire these imposing ruins perched above two streams. Imposing because Chalucet is actually a double castle. Here is the first, founded in the 12th century, with the immense Jeannette Tower. At its foot lies a castrum, that is to say, a village occupied by knights. 100 years later, a second castle was built a few hundred meters away: an imposing palace with all the latest defensive features. Chalucet then became one of the largest fortified complexes in the Limousin region. At the end of the 14th century, in the chaos of the Hundred Years' War, the abandoned castle was taken over by a band of brigands. Safely ensconced in their fortress, they extorted and terrorized the people of Limoges. Chalucet was never conquered, so why is it in ruins? Quite simply because the city of Limoges, fed up with having such a threat at its gates, finally obtained its dismantling. In the 16th century, they sent about a hundred workers who took four days to destroy it. The site remained derelict for a long time, but in 1996, Chalucet was bought by the Departmental Council, which restored it. The free, self-guided tour is all the more interesting because, thanks to an augmented reality application, you can travel through time and see the site in its different periods.
