Nuraghe Sa Domu 'e S'Orcu a Sarroch ~ 26 Ottobre 2020 | Sardegna

We explore the picturesque nuraghe of Sa Domu 'e s'Orcu, the most visited archaeological site in the Sarroch area. Dating back to the Middle Bronze Age, it is an easily accessible site and is the best preserved nuraghe in the Cagliari and Sulcitana hinterland. The Nuraghe Sa Domu 'e s'Orcu is a complex nuraghe in tancato, one of the most important and visited in the Sarroch area, not only for its historical importance, but also because it is easily accessible and usable, being equipped with paths, rest areas and signs, which you can see on this video:    • Sentiero per il Nuraghe Sa Domu 'e S'Orcu ...   The scientific excavation of the monument, conducted by Antonio Taramelli, who reported on it in 1926, was undertaken in the spring of 1924 thanks to funding from the Ministry of Education and the donation of the "Nob. Comm. Avv. Giuseppe Siotto", owner of the land , which "not only granted to carry out the excavations and research that were necessary, but granted all possible help". The nuraghe stands on a hill in the locality of Sa Punta. From Sarroch there are two entrances; following the signs, when you arrive at the public park turn right taking a dirt road that runs along a hill and a quarry, from this point the nuraghe is clearly visible, following the road you access a path to walk about 300 meters. We entered from the north side, from the municipal road of Perd'e Sali, where there is a reception structure (closed). The nuraghe consists of two towers ("a tancato" type) and an internal courtyard, in the entrance corridor a concrete column was erected in a first restoration operation in order to support the weight of the boulders, at risk of collapse. In front of the entrance, in the rectangular courtyard there is an apsidal niche, a construction detail common to many nuraghe. In the courtyard there are two other doors, one to the left of the entrance and one to the right, the latter through a short corridor , leads to the oldest tower, facing north; this tower is 8.10 meters high and has a circular base with a diameter of 10.15 meters. At a height of 4 meters there is an entrance leading to the terrace, through a corridor inside the wall 2.60 meters thick. The final part of the thòlos collapsed leaving the tower uncovered. With the entrance to the left of the courtyard, through a short corridor, you reach the other tower, added later. This tower has a base with a diameter of 9.20 meters, and is 6.75 meters high. Also in this tower the upper part has collapsed. The discovery, among the collapses, of some wedge-shaped ashlars in sandstone (others similar are visible in the Antigori and among the collapses of the Nuraghe Mereu), suggests that the towers should have ended upwards with a crowning in worked ashlars, probably functional to the mass in work of the typical corbels supporting the protruding terrace, in analogy with the documentation provided by various other nuraghi of the island and by the models of the cult area that depict them. The summit projection ensured by the presence of corbels would have allowed, in the military-defensive interpretation of the nuraghe, to regain the vertical position with respect to the inclination of the external wall, favoring the use of the terrace as a plumbing hole, as well as constituting an obstacle to climbing by the any attackers.
