Look Before You Leap

I want you to understand how dangerous it can be to jump to conclusions without knowing all the facts. In Joshua 22, the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh were misunderstood after building an altar near the Jordan River. The other tribes immediately assumed they had turned away from God and were prepared to go to war against them. But when they finally asked questions and listened, they discovered the altar was not an act of rebellion at all. It was meant as a memorial of faithfulness to God. That account reminds me that I must learn to “look before I leap” in the way I think about and treat others. Too often, I can be guilty of thinking the worst about someone without having all the facts. Jesus warned against this kind of judgment in the Sermon on the Mount when He said, “Judge not, that you be not judged.” Before I focus on the faults of another person, I need to examine my own life honestly. The same judgment I use against others can come back upon me. Jesus Himself was repeatedly criticized and misunderstood by people who judged Him without understanding His purpose. The Pharisees condemned Him for eating with sinners and spending time with people like Zacchaeus, but they failed to see that He came to seek and save the lost. I need to choose to think the best about others instead of assuming the worst. Paul taught that love “bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.” True Christian love gives others the benefit of the doubt and recognizes that fellow believers are striving to follow Christ just as I am. Rather than immediately becoming suspicious or critical, I should extend grace, patience, and understanding. Another important lesson is this: when I am in doubt, I need to ask questions instead of making assumptions. Jesus taught that if a brother sins against me, I should go directly to that person and speak with him privately. Honest communication is far better than gossip, rumors, or speculation. So many conflicts and damaged relationships could be avoided if people simply talked to one another instead of assuming motives or spreading accusations. Jumping to conclusions can cause terrible damage. Reputations can be ruined, relationships destroyed, and even faith weakened because of careless assumptions and hurtful words. The situation in Joshua nearly ended in tragedy because people reacted before they understood the truth. That is why I must guard my heart, develop greater love toward others, and strive to reflect the character of Christ in the way I think, speak, and act. In the end, I am reminded that God calls me to maturity, humility, and love. If I have failed in these areas—if I have judged unfairly, spread rumors, or thought the worst of others—I need to repent and seek forgiveness. Christ calls me to be better, to love deeper, and to treat others with the same grace and mercy that He has shown to me.
