The Crusades are usually taught as a clash between Christian Europe and the Islamic Middle East — but that story leaves out a crucial fact: the Middle East was already home to thriving, ancient Christian communities long before the Crusaders arrived. In this film, we uncover the forgotten history of Eastern Christianity — the Melkites, Jacobites, Copts, Armenians and Nestorians — who had lived under Muslim rule for centuries before 1095. Some of these communities welcomed the arrival of the Crusaders as potential liberators; others viewed them with deep suspicion, caught between two powers neither of which fully understood them. We explore how Crusader chroniclers described these communities, how the Crusader states actually governed a religiously diverse population, and why this complicates the simple "Christianity vs Islam" narrative that still dominates popular understanding of the Crusades today.
