1908 : Quand l’Empire ottoman rêvait de liberté, avec François Georgeon

In addition to territorial difficulties and interference from European powers, there were the failings of an autocratic regime which, under Abdülhamid II, stifled political and social life for a long time. It was in this climate of tension, but also of anticipation, that the Young Turk movement formed, around a central slogan: the restoration of the 1876 Constitution. François Georgeon thus proposes to revisit the ideological framework of the Young Turk revolution, its key figures, and the political regime that emerged in the summer of 1908. His analysis sheds light on the exhilarating sense of freedom that gripped the Empire, the enthusiasm shared by its various communities, but also the brevity of this period of grace. It highlights the ambiguities of a revolutionary period that opens a horizon of emancipation before quickly hardening. Guest: François Georgeon is an emeritus research director at the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research), specializing in the Ottoman Empire and contemporary Turkey. He is the author of *An Ottoman Spring: The Young Turk Revolution of 1908*, published by Les Belles Lettres (306 pp., €26.90). *** Facebook:   / histoireetcivilisationsmag   Instagram:   / histoireetcivilisations   Twitter:   / storiavoce
