In this episode we drive through Wadi Bani Awf and the Al Hajar Mountains, separating the low coastal plain from the high desert plateau of northern Oman. We visit historic mudbrick villages in the Nizwa region, including Al Hamra and Manah. Like many in Oman, these old towns are largely uninhabited these days, the former residents having moved to more modern houses nearby. But, the warren of mudbrick homes remain, slowly crumbling away. Manah is particularly interesting because it has been undergoing restoration since 2008 and while much of this 900 year old town still lies in ruin, there are also many buildings which have been restored.
