Cuidado de los adultos mayores: ¿En qué condiciones queremos que envejezca la población uruguaya?
The case of the nursing home in La Unión, where more than 20 elderly people were rescued Friday night from conditions "incompatible with human dignity"—according to the National Human Rights Institution—moved us all. On Sunday, the owner and manager of the nursing home were charged with repeated counts of unlawful deprivation of liberty, abandonment of incapacitated persons, fraud, and failure to provide assistance. According to the prosecutor, the legitimate nursing home was a front: the place where the elderly residents were actually found, in unsanitary conditions, was another facility. At the hearing, some family members testified that they had to give advance notice before each visit and were always received at the nursing home where their relatives had been admitted. They were completely unaware of the existence of this other facility. But this situation—nursing homes operating under inappropriate conditions—is more common than it seems. And as a society that is aging at an increasingly rapid pace, this issue should be increasingly prominent on the public agenda. Under what conditions do we want the Uruguayan population to age? Who should be responsible for the care of older adults? Should it depend so much on pensions or on families? What about those who don't have children, a situation that will become increasingly common? In fact, the possibility of creating a funding source for the future care of older adults was discussed in the Social Dialogue. What became of that idea? What other alternatives are there to consider? ----------------------------------------------------------------- Become a member of this channel to enjoy benefits: https://www.youtube.com/EnPerspectiva...
