"Small Blood Vessels: Big Health Problems?": Scientific Recommendations of the National Institutes of Health Workshop Tiny blood vessels (smaller than 100 μm in internal diameter) control the health of our organs—and when they fail, they can trigger serious problems like stroke, dementia, and hypertension. Scientists stress that understanding these vessels is critical for preventing and treating life-changing diseases. This NIH workshop brought together leading scientists and clinicians to examine the critical role of small blood vessels in health and disease. Experts discussed how tiny vessels influence organ function, the blood-brain barrier, and the development of serious conditions like hypertension, dementia, and microinfarcts. The sessions highlighted the complexity of small vessel biology, cellular interactions, genetic and environmental influences, and the urgent need for better research models, imaging methods, biomarkers, and targeted therapies.
