Was Fairbanks Worth It for the Northern Lights?

We chose Fairbanks, Alaska for our 2026 Northern Lights trip — but was it actually the right choice? After comparing Finland, Norway, Iceland, and Alaska, Fairbanks looked like the practical aurora destination: strong Northern Lights odds, fewer time zones from Dallas, no passport, and plenty to do if the clouds rolled in. But “practical” did not mean easy. In this episode, we start our Fairbanks aurora trip with minus 27°F temperatures, serious winter layering, a heated ice-fishing tent, fresh pizza in the middle of nowhere, and our first real look at the aurora borealis. We also visit an Aurora Glass House and compare the comfort, service, snacks, value, and overall experience of both aurora outings through the Travelled Well scorecard.
