In a strict and unprecedented move against organized crime in the state capital, the Commissionerate Police and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) launched a joint demolition drive. The action was taken against two main accused—Sekh Hamid and Ramjan—who are currently on the run after stealing lakhs of rupees worth of aluminum Smart City street lights and electric poles from the streets of Bhubaneswar. Out of the 7 members involved in this high-profile theft syndicate, the police have already arrested 5. However, to teach the absconding duo a lesson, bulldozers rolled into the Shanti Nagar slum, completely flattening their illegal houses as well as the scrap yard (Kabadi shop) where the stolen government properties were being illegally stored and sold.
