Descendants of enslaved Ghanaians call for reparatory justice ahead of landmark conference

Ghanaians at the forefront of the fight for reparations for enslaved Africans called for reparatory justice for the continent -ahead of Ghana's global reparations conference - in an exclusive package from Accra, filmed on Monday. "Every other race, every other group of people that were harmed and negatively impacted in America, including the Japanese, the Native American, the Jewish people," said Chauncia Willis-Johnson, Ghana Climate Centre of Excellence co-founder. "Everyone has received compensation for their suffering, except for African American people, and unfortunately, we know and fully acknowledge that we help build the entire country, so for us to never receive even a discount of any sort on anything, because of our suffering, it makes me angry, and it makes me angry for my son. It makes me angry for his children and his children's children," Willis-Johnson added. The conference takes place on June 17-19 in Accra, and is led by President John Dramani Mahama. It follows the historic UN vote in March. Spearheaded by Ghana and backed by the African Union, the vote declared the transatlantic slave trade ‘gravest crime against humanity’.
