Botanisch schilderen met Sigrid Frensen-de Vries
Sigrid Frensen shows the process of making a botanical painting. The video is made by Haye Bijlstra for the exhibition "Bloemenboek, het florilegium van Franciscus de Geest" in Tresoar, the Frisian Historian and Literary Centre in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands. The texts in the video are Frisian and Dutch (no English, I'm sorry). But for those of you who think they REALLY need the subtitles: Botanical Painting Sigrid Frensen-de Vries paints the blossom of the "Blenheim Reinette" Sigrid chooses a suitable branch with blossoms. As a reference she takes already some photos. The sketching starts right away. The flower grows so photos are taken often. Also the colour tests are being made. The blossom is drawn in life size. The sketches gets traced on transparent paper. With loose leaves the composition is being made. With a soft pencil the back gets traced. The watercolour paper gets cut to the right size. The watermark in the paper shows which side to paint on. The pencil-side of the trace is put on the paper. With a coloured pencil the drawing is being transferred. With a hard pencil all lines are traced. Most of the graphite is taken off with a kneadable eraser The palette is being set up, the painting begins. The first layer of paint is called the Tea-wash. Layer upon layer the flower takes shape. The painting shows all the growing stages of the blossom. Very thin lines are best painted on a dry surface. The blossom of the "Blenheim Reinette" was painted in two weeks. It could be that the English is a bit odd but for me it's a bit late. But I guess you'll get the idea of what is written now
