The Dark Ages is part of the Doom series and serves as a prequel to the 2016 Doom and Doom Eternal. The game was released on May 15, 2025. Doom: The Dark Ages is a prequel to the 2016 Doom. As in previous installments, the protagonist is the Doom Slayer, who faces hordes of demons from Hell. The game takes place in a techno-medieval setting. Long before the Hellish invasion of Mars and Earth, the Night Sentinels of Argent D'Nur, led by King Novik and Commanders Fyra and Valen, along with their allies, the Shapers, were engaged in a brutal war with the Hellish forces seeking the Argent Heart. The Doom Slayer, empowered by the Shapers, is sent to help turn the tide in humanity's favor. However, the Slayer does not fight entirely of his own free will, as his master, Creed the Shaper, suppresses his mind with a device called the Tether. Meanwhile, the leader of the Hellish forces, Prince Azrak, realizes that attempting to fight the Slayer directly is unwise and focuses his efforts on finding the Heart. Eventually, Azrak discovers the Heart's hidden location and attacks it, but the Slayer and Novik, working together, manage to thwart Azrak and prevent the Heart from falling into his hands. However, Novik decides to keep the Heart for himself, not fully trusting the Doom Slayer or the Shapers. Azrak then leads a counterattack to surround and destroy the Guardian forces before they can escape. Creed refuses to use the Slayer to aid them, intending to keep himself safe. Unwilling to see demons slaughter innocents, the Slayer breaks free of the Tether's control over him, forcing Creed to send him back into the battle, where he successfully holds off the demons long enough for the Guardians to escape. After suffering another blow, Azrak proposes an alliance with Creed. Meanwhile, the Slayer attempts to remove the Tether from his armor, but to no avail, and Fira tasks him with finding the Heart of Argent's power source before Azrak does...
